East Carolina University, Spring 2024 Art 1014 - Narrative in Film
Students learn art and design terminology and vocabulary related to form, space, color and photography in written and oral communication. Students learn demonstrate their ability to apply color theories and models across media in art and design projects; apply principles of visual organization utilizing a variety of visual art media and tools, ranging from digital photography to Photoshop. Students critically evaluate work through the lens of art and design, formulate a unique artistic perspective, and apply their perspective to photography projects.
Photo Narrative
Students create a narrative using ten photographs to tell a story. Students study Chris Marker’s La Jetee and research narrative-based images and photographers. Students use digital photography to tell a narrative both sequentially and through a single image. For this assignment, students are required to take thirty photographs and make selections that best convey their determined narrative.
Dreamscape
After watching and reading Satoshi Kon’s Paprika (2006), students come up with an idea for a film (one that does not already exist) and write a synopsis. They then create a photograph depicting a scene from that movie. Students study mise-en-scène and how filmmakers and photographers construct a scene. Students learn how to communicate their determined conceptual framework and how to convey their ideas through photography by paying attention to detail, lighting, camera angles, color and objects.
Photographic Comic Book
For the final project, students create a photographic comic book that consists of a created narrative told through the photographs. Students utilize their camera and editing skills to create a two-page comic book spread. They use Photoshop to edit their photographs and create the spread. This projects gives students the opportunity to display their knowledge of telling a narrative through photographs.
